Alex Wall cut his teeth with the bratty bubblegum punk of teenage duo Bleeding Knees Club, but the Australian’s third solo album as Wax Witches favours droning, syrupy psychedelia. While there are still shots of snide catchiness (lead single “Habit”), Memory Painting pays extended tribute to The Jesus and Mary Chain’s slow-burn noise-pop. Now based in Brooklyn, where he recorded these songs in his bedroom, Wall matures most noticeably when tackling bashful romance on “Morning Flowers” and distinctly adult anxieties on “Terracotta Chains.”
