Schumann: Symphonies Nos. 1-4

Schumann: Symphonies Nos. 1-4

Michael Tilson Thomas and his fine San Francisco ensemble offer highly musical and clearly long-pondered big-band interpretations of Schumann’s complete symphonies. The slow movements seem to draw a special magic from these players, but the rhythmic precision and magnificent solo work—particularly from the winds—give the faster movements real lift and sparkle. Among a series of very fine recordings, the Spring Symphony (no. 1) in particular is a lovely performance that can’t fail to delight.
