Dancing Backward In High Heels (Deluxe Version)

On their third post-comeback album, New York Dolls drop many of their longtime gutter-glam trappings to fully embrace their ‘60s R&B influences. “Fool for You Baby,” an organ-soaked look back at girl-group pop, has a wistful sweetness that only highlights the barb in David Johansen’s bellow; the rowdier “I’m so Fabulous” takes potshots at gentrified New York over squealing sax blasts and slide guitar. Most unexpected of all might be “You Don’t Have to Cry,” a winsome folk-rock lament complete with horns and strings.
