The moodiness of James' alt-rock simmers at a low, tantalizing frequency on 1993's Laid. Under the influence of producer Brian Eno, it’s a slow, subdued seduction, starting with the hushed, lonely-man lament "Out to Get You," before moving into the dusky, ominous shuffle of "Dream Thrum" and the softly twanging gallop guiding "Five-O." The band hit gold on the frisky, bawdy, acoustic-powered title track and cool down with the trippy ambient trance of "Skindiving.”
