Jazz Giants '58

Producer Norman Granz had a serious knack for organizing ad-hoc combinations of musicians and letting them create spontaneous magic. This 1958 session brought together seven greats—including Oscar Peterson and Gerry Mulligan—for a loose but ingratiating stroll through a handful of favorites. Tenor-sax great Stan Getz makes the strongest impact, wielding his velvety tone and limber phrasing with exquisite restraint. He glides smoothly through the medium-tempo blues of “Chocolate Sunday” and brings tender reflection to “It Never Entered My Mind.”
