On his 32nd album, the Godfather of Soul ventured into big-band jazz for a revelatory one-off that wasn’t as much of a detour as it may have seemed. Backed by the 18-piece Louie Bellson Orchestra, Brown transposes his ferocity and charisma to show tunes (“What Kind Of Fool Am !?”) and standards (“It’s Magic”) yet never sounds like anything but his irrepressible self. Swinging reimaginings of Brown’s own “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” and “It’s a Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World” only highlight and enhance the power of the originals while his dramatic, downright funky takeover of Hank Williams’ plaintive country ballad “Your Cheatin’ Heart” serves to remind that soul is a feeling, not a genre.
