No matter how much his music changed, Miles always had an ear for talent. When moving toward a hard-bop sound in the early ’50s, he shone a light on two young saxophonists who became important stylists: altoist Jackie McLean, who wrote the hard-charging title track (and also played on Miles’ compositions), and tenor innovator Sonny Rollins, heard here in fine, early form, flaunting his melodious approach to soloing during “It’s Only a Paper Moon.”
