The New Folk Sound of Terry Callier (Deluxe Edition)

When Terry Callier cut his debut album in 1964, his freewheeling mix of folk, jazz, and soul was wildly innovative, but, unfortunately for him, it wouldn’t be released until 1968. Regardless, all these decades later it still sounds strikingly fresh, as Callier brings his big buttermilk baritone to folk tunes that he and his two (!) standup bassists expand into loose-limbed jazzy excursions. Even an old chestnut like "Cotton Eyed Joe" is completely transformed, as Callier's fearless phrasing stretches it into a tantalizing taffy.
