Bandleader Kevin Parker adores loosely wound and surging psych rock—the kind that owes as much to Nazz and Revolver-era Beatles as it does to The Stone Roses and contemporaries like Dungen. The densely layered textures on Tame Impala's 2010 debut are combined with Parker's impressionistic lyrics, which often come warbling out of a Leslie speaker with a feather-light John Lennon inflection. The album's lush sonic swirls and stomping garage-rock hooks are intoxicating on their own, but its emotional heft makes InnerSpeaker so breathtaking.
