Let's Get to It

Let's Get to It

After shaking off her early bubblegum-pop image on 1990’s risqué Rhythm of Love, Kylie Minogue made a more concerted effort to land on the playlists of the most discerning club DJs with her fourth album, Let’s Get to It. Where her previous records were largely shaped by the powerhouse British songwriting team Stock Aitken Waterman, the 1991 departure of Matt Aitken prompted the remaining partners to include Kylie in their creative process for the first time. The results reflected the singer’s growing fascination with rave culture: “Right Here, Right Now” is pure peak-hour house euphoria, while “I Guess I Like It Like That” flips a sample of 2 Unlimited’s “Get Ready for This” into a strobe-lit banger of her own. But Kylie still thrived in more intimate spaces: “If You Were With Me Now” is a soft-focus duet with R&B heartthrob Keith Washington that kept her in the good graces of adult-contemporary radio programmers. Alas, Let’s Get to It didn’t light up the global charts to the same degree as its predecessors, but by giving Minogue the space to exert more creative control, the album was a crucial step on her ascent toward pop domination.
