A Philosophy Warping, Little by Little That Way Lies a Quagmire

Japanese avant-guitar iconoclast Keiji Haino battles Turkish free-jazz band Konstrukt on a live album that's both forbidding and breathtaking. Recorded in Istanbul, it comprises two long-form pieces, each broken into three slashing and squealing slabs of improvisation. The group lays down off-kilter grooves that soon explode into noise, while their brass proves a perfect match for Haino’s feedback. Certain movements recall Krautrockers Can at their most disembodied—rippling soundscapes flecked with Haino's howls—and others approach the hurricane-force psychedelia of his Fushitsusha project. Like all releases in Haino's decades-spanning catalog, this set pushes jazz and rock to disorienting but cathartic extremes.
