For New Great Lakes, Downpilot’s been downsized to its leader Paul Hiraga, with his former collaborator Anne Marie Ruljancich adding vocals in strategic spots. Past recordings were made with assistance from producer Tucker Martine and Wedding Present bassist Terry de Casto. The stripped-down approach here means the “band” sound is now much more sedate and modest than on previous releases. The additional intimacy points up just how good a writer and singer Hiraga has become. Tunes such as “Edge of the Flood,” “Gone Castaway," and “Desolation Pass” exude a charm and maturity reminiscent of songwriters like Jackson Browne and Matthew Sweet. The arrangements center on the keyboard, with judicious sweetening where needed. Hiraga may be Seattle-based, but he sings “NY Storms” with the authority of an East Coast resident, while “The Rustbelt,” the title track, and “Rosebud of the Plain” send him into middle America. “Through Your Lines” is an aching and eerie ballad where Ruljancich and Hiraga use their voices to weave a mystery.
