Ziguri is a collaboration between Krautrock legends Gunter Schickert, Udo Erdenreich, and Dieter Kolsch. After being active between 1987 and 1997, the trio reformed in 2011 and in 2014 issued their first official album. Schickert had pioneered his own heavily reverbed and echoed guitar sound on his solo albums in the '70s. This release captures their enviable ways with concise songwriting (“General Klickman”) and exploratory jams that lead to heavenly atmospherics and cathartic moments (“Massa”). A vocal number like “Yoyodyne” works with a sing-song melody and an aggressive rhythmic component, with spaced-out guitars lurking in the background. “Bella Hopp” pushes the guitars to the front of the mix for an aggressive showpiece that also features singing in tongues. The complex (and often surprisingly upbeat) rhythms of “Goa Constrictor” finish off things in epic style, which is the best way to experience these unique musicians.
