Electronic artist Steve Roach has an extensive catalog with very subtle shifts in sound. Some albums are higher energy, some more tribal. This brilliant ambient work was created specifically to enhance the home environment, particular the sleeping environment, with a soothing dark drone that Roach tested himself in his sleep chamber. The 73-minute length is a welcomed approach and a very good sign since Roach’s music is meant to expand and create a leisurely wave. Roach describes the work as “billowing…like a big sigh” and one can clearly hear what he means. Created in its entirety on the bottom end of his synthesizers, A Deeper Silence is reminiscent of Roach works such as The Dream Circle, Structures from Silence and Darkest Before Dawn. The track plays as a slow-motioned eclipse or as the gentle soundtrack to a lava lamp, its forms consistently shifting in a slow and seamless flow.
