Tales, Musings and other Reveries

Trumpeter Jeremy Pelt’s Tales, Musings and Other Reveries is strongly marked by its two-drummers-in-tandem team of Bill Drummond and Victor Lewis. The pair create a rich percussive fabric that melds with the rest of the band: Pelt, pianist Simona Premazzi, and bassist Ben Allison. The striking opener, Clifford Jordan’s “Glass Bead Games,” immediately announces that this isn't post-bop by-the-numbers; there's mystery and intrigue. A welcome cover of Wayne Shorter’s “Vonetta” features finely burnished trumpet tones, and Pelt displays impressive writing skills on “Harlem Thoroughfare,” a track that bristles with stop-start rhythms and edgy energy.
