History of Soukous: '60s

In the '60s, Congolese rumba—driven by a faster tempo and incorporating dance elements—evolved into a new genre called soukous, meaning “to shake”. The hybrid of African music, electric guitars and Caribbean rhythms moves this collection of tracks by artists like Sam Mangwana, master guitarist Franco and Joseph Kabasele, a.k.a. Le Grand Kallé.
