Five years from their third outing, the appeal of English rockers The Duke Spirit and their graceful shoegazing remains magnetic. The raw guitars and echo-chamber vocal on Sonar emit a delicious sleaziness, while the throbbing, racing reverb on Blue and Yellow Light” soars hauntingly like a ghost above a cityscape. But its their rhythm method and mastery of minor-chord harmonies (dark rock song Hands, the slinky new wave on Anola) which recall murky late ‘80s references in a completely contemporary fashion.
