Evolution

Paul van Dyk is one of the world's most famous DJ/producers, and along with Paul Oakenfold he's created a brand within the largely anonymous, transient, free-flowing club-music community. He prefers the term "electronic dance music" to "trance," but it's apparent that much of his approach follows the maxim that an idea worth exploring is one worth repeating until it creates a hypnotic sense of its own. Evolution is his first album of new material since 2007's In Between, and it continues his love of collaboration and lets conventional songs form within his whooshing sound collages. Adam Young turns "Eternity" into a genuine succinct pop dose, while "Heart Stop Beating," with Sarah Howells, takes frenetic dance beats into a realm where radio shouldn't fear. "If You Want My Love," with vocals from Caligola, further mines the pop song for a basic framework. But the album also wanders through instrumental patches where the skies open on the piano notes of "The Ocean" or traverse the dance floor with "The Sun After Heartbreak" and "Rock This."
