Apple Music Home Session: Yard Act

Yard Act honour one of pop’s all-time greats on this Apple Music Home Session, covering Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer”.“We chose ‘Tiny Dancer’ due to the kind comments Sir Elton had paid us in the press,” frontman James Smith tells Apple Music. (The Apple Music Radio host has identified the Leeds post-punks as one his favourite new acts in multiple interviews.) “A song like ‘Tiny Dancer’ seems so far removed from what people assume Yard Act is, we thought it would be a really interesting way of showing not only our own versatility, but also the versatility of a song as good as ‘Tiny Dancer’. Bernie Taupin paints such a rich visual scene with his words but keeps it just abstract enough that you can pull your own meaning from it, and Elton scores it in a way which ebbs and flows and builds, the whole thing is really cinematic. All good songs tell a story, but great songs tell several.” Sure enough, the track becomes something fresh in the four-piece’s hands—satisfyingly lopsided and conversational. There’s also a new version of Yard Act’s 2021 single ‘Land of the Blind’, an exploration of the power of confidence, here. Paired together, the recordings cement Yard Act’s status as one of British alternative music’s most exciting new acts—one that’s flourishing despite the restrictions and challenges of 2020 and 2021. “[That period taught me] to slow down, and to make the most of the moment,” says Smith. “It taught me to adapt to things you can't change.”
