Loraine James Essentials

For Loraine James, evolution is a constant. Since 2015, the Enfield producer has been painstakingly crafting a singular sound with textured productions inspired as much by math rock and emo as they are by '90s IDM. James’s breakout 2019 album, For You and I—a navigation of her identity as a queer Black person living in London, set against abrasive and atmospheric backdrops—established her as one of underground electronic music’s exciting new faces. Over the next few years, she pushed herself further, exploring drill and R&B influences, working with more vocalists, launching an ambient alias (Whatever the Weather), and reimagining the work of late composer Julius Eastman. Between the introspective lyrics and transportive soundscapes, James’s music lingers long after its last note.
