Armin van Buuren’s third album of original music, from 2008, hints at a wave of pop-EDM crossover looming on the horizon. Moving away from the linear grooves of his DJ sets, the Dutch superstar DJ narrows Shivers’ songwriting focus: “Going Wrong” is a soaring fusion of trance and rock, and “Fine Without You” borrows a muscled bassline from New Wave. “In and Out of Love,” one of his biggest hits, polishes progressive breaks with melodic, ‘80s-flavoured synth pop. But the trance faithful can breathe easy: The steely, classic “Face to Face” is a distillation of pure dance-floor energy.
