William Prince Essentials

Indigenous folk singer William Prince’s lyrically rich songs turned him into one of Canada’s most celebrated musical storytellers. Born in 1986, in Selkirk, MB, Prince grew up on Peguis First Nation under the guidance of his pastor and musician father, Edward. It took nearly a decade to get his 2015 debut, Earthly Days, recorded, but the album was an instant critical success, driven in no small part by the torch song “Breathless.” Edward died shortly before its release, and the loss would inform his son’s two 2020 albums. Reliever addresses death, separation, and fatherhood with hopeful resilience; Gospel First Nation explores the complex relationship between Christianity and First Nations communities in Manitoba. Prince’s subjects are rarely easy or simple, but his compassionate and nuanced perspective renders them with intricate care, making room for the complexity and contradiction intrinsic to human nature.
