Widespread Panic Essentials

Space Wrangler, the title track of this Georgia-based jam band's 1988 debut, remains a distillation of their flawlessly flowing, turn-on-a-dime style. Especially during Widespread Panic's years with co-founding guitarist Michael Houser, whose unique lyricism can be savored in "Driving Song," the sextet combine celebration, urgency, and slightly surreal Southern soul in bittersweet anthems like "Ain't Life Grand." Lead vocalist John Bell's bluesy rasp powers their popular Jerry Joseph cover, "Climb to Safety," and "Love Tractor" captures Panic's post-Houser incarnation with guitar virtuoso Jimmy Herring.
