War: Deep Cuts

War: Deep Cuts

Before their melting-pot funk sound had fully congealed, War discovered their battle cry in the songs of others: On “Tobacco Road,” founding vocalist Eric Burdon brings his Animals-trained swagger to the ‘60s garage-band standard, while the band lay down a fleet-footed Motown rhythm. Post-Burdon, they ventured far beyond that bluesy base: “River Niger” is a hypnotic Afrobeat jam whose sweaty sax groove yields to waves of heavenly harmonies.
