Verzuz Cheat Sheet: The LOX x Dipset

King of New York hasn’t been a title people have argued over since maybe the days of JAY-Z and Nas beefing, but in the time since those two titans clashed, a great many crews have claimed to, at some point, “run the city.” Two of the most deserving of said claim—The LOX and Dipset—will come together on August 3 at Madison Square Garden to showcase their very rich catalogs and face off for bragging rights. Both collectives feature prolific MCs whose output spans decades. Yonkers trio The LOX come from Dee and Waah’s Ruff Ryders crew, having gone on to make hits at Bad Boy, foster their own D-Block movement, and then deliver countless street classics as solo artists. All three primary MCs in Dipset—Cam’ron, Juelz Santana, and Jim Jones—have at different points in their careers had legitimate claims as the most important rapper in the city. The influence of their Diplomatic Immunity era is the stuff of legend, and if we’re talking eras, one could potentially write a term paper on the multiple deviations of Cam’ron’s career. When it comes down to The LOX versus Dipset, it’s really about whoever YOUR crew was the listening to the most. Because both have catalogs that demand nods of salvation in any hood in NYC. Get reacquainted with the music they made by way of the official The LOX x Dipset Cheat Sheet playlist, as curated by Apple Music host Lowkey.
