Urge Overkill Essentials

Alt-power-pop warhorses Urge Overkill were poised for indie rock stardom, but bad press upended their shot at fame. Formed in 1985, Urge initially channeled the noise punk of their native Chicago. A shift to glam-fueled rock earned them both the opening slot on Nirvana's Nevermind tour and a contract with DGC Records. Their cover of Neil Diamond's “Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon” for the Pulp Fiction soundtrack looked like a breakthrough, but bad reviews and worse behavior torpedoed their chances. Urge went underground, then resurfaced with a new lineup in 2011.
