Third World Essentials

One of reggae's most enduring acts, Third World's pop and R&B-friendly sound granted them global crossover success during the '70s and '80s. Formed by Michael "Ibo" Cooper and Stephen "Cat" Coore, both formerly of Inner Circle, the group were a modest success in Jamaica but attracted more attention after moving to England. A high-profile opening slot on tour with Bob Marley and the addition of singer Bunny Rugs then helped them to chart on both sides of the Atlantic. Their mix of disco, R&B, and funk may have alienated reggae purists, but they continued to land hits well into their 25th year.
