The New Pornographers Essentials

Putting the strength-in-numbers theory into action, The New Pornographers' 2000 debut, Mass Romantic, corralled the vivacious vocals of budding country phenom Neko Case and songwriting prowess of a then-unsung Carl Newman and Dan Bejar to deliver a pure power pop knockout. Since then, the Vancouver supergroup have never wavered in their mission to produce cryptic yet catchy confections (“Sing Me Spanish Techno,” indeed). But the sugar-rush exuberance can mask their ornate craftsmanship, be it the string-swept strut of 2010's “Moves” or the synth-powered stomp of 2014's “Dancehall Domine.”
