The Mamas & The Papas only lasted a few years as a band, but their sing-along folk rock has never lost its startling freshness. Mingling melancholy and joy as if they were the most natural bedfellows, the L.A. quartet radiate sunny warmth via lush vocal harmonies and flowing arrangements on the gently psychedelic “California Dreamin'” and the sighing pop lament “Monday, Monday.” They also put their own sensitive stamp on soul gems like “My Girl,” “Dedicated to the One I Love,” and “Dancing in the Street,” while brimming with cheeky mischief on 1967's autobiographical lark “Creeque Alley.”
