Lush harmonies, baroque-pop chord progressions, and various subspecies of ’70s jangle are the signatures of Long Island, NY, fraternal duo The Lemon Twigs. The multitalented former child actors deliver playful and deft pop-rock compositions full of gestures from bygone eras—The Beach Boys, Todd Rundgren, 10cc, Elton John—that are as infectious and elaborately plotted. Recorded when they were still in their teens, their 2016 debut, Do Hollywood, showed off their prodigious talent and the strong bones of their songwriting, transcending pastiche (“I Wanna Prove to You”). Go to School—a 2018 concept album about a chimpanzee—demonstrated the charming breadth of their shared imagination. The Twigs’ records of the early 2020s showcased the brothers honing their chops and letting their sense of humor run free (as on Songs for the General Public’s glam-rocker “Moon” and its iconic one-liner “We resent tall guys”).
