With the help of my son, Davis, I curated this playlist to commemorate the launch of my book, The Joy of the Disinherited, Essays on Trauma, Oppression, and Black Mental Health. The songs are songs that inspire me and have carried me through some difficult moments of life. Some of the songs also remind me of moments of joy. The pieces represent many genres and periods. While the lyrics are personal, they are also universal to the African American experience.
