The Fucking Champs Essentials

The Fucking Champs Essentials

As their name suggests, The Fucking Champs aren't ones for subtlety or humility. The San Francisco power trio's pedigree includes post-hardcore heroes Nation of Ulysses and post-rock maestros Trans Am, but as the Champs, they've unabashedly channeled their love of '70s prog and '80s hard rock into exultant instru-metal jams. From 1997, “Andres Segovia Interests Me” showcases their ability to massage spastic riffage with gleaming melody lines; by 2000's “Thor Is Like Immortal,” those lines had flourished into a quasi-classical guitar symphonette. And on 2007's “Play On Words,” they wallop and wail like a free-jazz Van Halen.
