The Budos Band, Staten Island's purveyors of Afro-funk and soul, formed in 1995. The nine-piece group occupies similar territory to its Daptone labelmates, Antibalas, with the Budos' dense heavyweight funk being melded with psychedelic blaxploitation and the hypnotic groove of '60s and '70s Ethiopian jazz. This beefy powerhouse selection gets deep into the instrumental band's Gabriel Roth-produced second and third albums, released in 2007 and 2010, respectively.
