The B-52's Essentials

The B-52's Essentials

The B-52's not only brought kitsch and irony to new wave, they put the sleepy college town of Athens, Georgia, on the map. Singers Fred Schneider, Kate Pierson, and Cindy Wilson—along with guitarist Ricky Wilson and drummer Keith Strickland—fused monster-movie goofs, girl-group sass, and garage-rock stomp into retro-futuristic party music that made everyone want to dance. Ricky's death in 1985 ended the party for several years, but 1989's Cosmic Thing brought a more mature spirit and contained their biggest hits, including the epochal "Love Shack." They're still bringing it live today.
