The Animals Essentials

The original incarnation of The Animals, with Eric Burdon on vocals and Alan Price on organ, was the most authentically bluesy of the first wave British Invasion bands. Their debut hit "House of the Rising Sun" transformed a folk standard into a heavy, swampy groove. Later singles were downright punky in their attitude even when they flirted with more traditional pop sounds. In 1967, a newly psychedelicized Burdon moved from the north of England to San Francisco and formed a new lineup of The Animals with a gentler, more hippie-friendly sound. Two years later, he struck out on his own.
