Dutch singer/songwriter/producer Erik de Jong, a.k.a. Spinvis, struck upon success late in the day, releasing his self-titled 2002 debut at age 40. Delivering a stripped-back sound that combines rock guitars with vintage synths and drum machines, Spinvis puts his warm, unassuming voice to spry melodies and moving pop harmonies. It's a combination that soars on songs such as the dancey “Oostende,” a delicate mix of dreamy glockenspiels, bright drums, hand claps, and toy organs; or the beatific “Voor Ik Vergeet,” which finds space for both a breathy female vocal and a pump organ solo.
