The UK punk duo SOFT PLAY need only two members to make maximum noise. They draw equally from the bluesy swagger and louche charisma of British icons like The Rolling Stones and The Kinks, and the noisy ferocity of American alternative acts like Nirvana. Singer/guitarist Laurie Vincent can move fluidly between a restrained, too-cool-for school performance and explosive, unhinged bellowing on feedback-soaked anthems like “Take Control,” and he and drummer Isaac Holman are as comfortable with a steady, slow-building groove—check out “The Hunter”—as with a manic punk rager like “Spit It Out.” In other words: They know when to hold back and when to let it rip.
