Slum Village Essentials

If Eminem is Detroit's breakout star, then Slum Village are the city's underground hip-hop heroes. Originally consisting of J Dilla, T3, and Baatin, their Fantastic, Vol 1 album was leaked onto the local scene in the mid-'90s and became a buzzed about project. With a sound defined by Dilla's innovative production and sophisticated ear for flipping samples, the group's Fantastic, Vol 2 dropped in 2000 to critical acclaim. After Dilla left to pursue a solo career, he was replaced by the rapper Elzhi for '02's Trinity (Past, Present and Future).
