Shirley Scott Essentials

Laying down snake-charming runs of Hammond organ, Philadelphia keyboardist Shirley Scott made rollicking overtures to rock and soul with her joyous jazz instrumentals. See her stomping 1969 take on The Beatles' “Get Back” with all-star band The Soul Saxes, and the Stax-style guitar licks punctuating 1968's smoky “Think.” A prolific collaborator, Scott teamed up with tenor saxophonist—and her husband—Stanley Turrentine for feel-good exchanges like “Good Lookin' Out” and “The Soul Is Willing.” And though she made a regular habit of marathon grooves, Scott proved just as potent in under four minutes on 1959's affable “Takin' Care of Business.”
