Shimza Essentials

Shimza Essentials

Both as an artist and as an event organizer, Shimza has made a name for himself as an ambassador of South African house music. Having performed for audiences in Europe and North America, the Tembisa native consistently opens himself up to the new sounds to which he’s exposed. While his signature is hard-hitting drums and fizzy synths, Shimza (born Ashley Raphala) easily maneuvers through the entire spectrum of dance music. “Kethiwe,” his collaboration with deep house producer Darque, embraces the soul that defines SA house. On “Uwrongo,” he trades his percussion-driven style for a slick, vocal-forward collaboration with singer Ami Faku and house heavyweights Prince Kaybee and Black Motion. Yet even when he experiments with different moods, his robust beats are engulfed by warm pads and drum programming that maintain a distinctly South African DNA.
