Shenandoah Essentials

Finding fame in the ’80s by blending country, pop, and old-school rock ’n’ roll, the Muscle Shoals-based Shenandoah was the second part of the one-two punch set up by country superstars Alabama earlier in the decade. The band came together in 1984, all the members except singer Marty Raybon having previously been session players. Its first album was co-produced by the renowned Rick Hall of Muscle Shoals’ legendary FAME Studios, and it yielded a country Top 10 single in 1988 with “She Doesn’t Cry Anymore.” But the group really broke out with its second album, 1989’s The Road Not Taken, and such No. 1 hits as “Two Dozen Roses” and the rocking “The Church On Cumberland Road.” Shenandoah shut down for a bit when Raybon left in 1997 to pursue a solo career. In 2000 the band rebooted, bringing on a succession of different singers, but in 2014, Raybon came back aboard.
