Shalamar Essentials

Shalamar Essentials

Originally created by Soul Train producer Don Cornelius and the show's booking agent Dick Griffey, Shalamar produced a vein of disco-heavy R&B and funk that quickly transcended the musical variety program and set trends in music and fashion in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Including Howard Hewett, Jeffrey Daniel, and Jody Watley, who later became a successful solo artist, the trio scored career-defining hits like 1979's "The Second Time Around," but the group is most widely known for 1984's "Dancing in the Sheets,” a smash on the Footloose soundtrack.
