Senses Fail Essentials

Post-hardcore unit Senses Fail’s name was inspired by the teenage Buddhism reading list of lead singer Buddy Nielsen, who has remained the band’s only consistent member across its impressive tenure. His high, soaring choruses and feral screamo detours (as on 2022’s “End of the World/A Game of Chess”) made him one of his generation of emo-influenced bands’ most respected vocal talents. Wrought in the cauldron of the New Jersey hardcore scene of the early 2000s, the group graduated from skate punk into a heavier sound centered on Nielsen’s engaging vocal melodies and knotty, soul-baring lyrics. Its 2004 debut LP, Let It Enfold You, kicked off a 20-year-plus stretch of acclaimed albums—the musical direction of which was often influenced by difficult events in Nielsen’s life—which built Senses Fail a diehard fanbase and earned it steady placement on the indie charts.
