Selects: Otik

Bristol-born, London-based producer Otik (born Ashley Thomas) makes tunes that burrow deep into the amygdala. Whether he’s working with elements from techno, house, bass, or—as he does on his recent “Epiphania” three-tracker—drum ’n’ bass and trance, he manages to coax a well of emotions from his machines, tempering moody depths with euphoric highs. His pick for Selects—the playlist in which today’s best producers and DJs share their favorite tracks of the moment—are similarly vibey, combining the darkly cinematic atmospheres of Burial and Actress with more propulsive tracks from Daphni and DJ Seinfeld (with plenty of leftfield surprises mixed throughout). “[It’s] a portal into my everyday life, my influences as an artist, and beyond,” Otik tells Apple Music. “Lots of these tracks are super nostalgic to me, and others are fresh finds I’ve been trying out at the club. This playlist was made not only to catch a groove, but also for a transcendent listening experience.” If you hear something you like, add it to your library.
