Selects: Nightmares on Wax

Ever since he started making soulful, downtempo electronic music as Nightmares on Wax in the late ’80s, Leeds producer George Evelyn has established himself as a master of mood and groove. His latest, ninth album, Shout Out! To Freedom…, explores the concept of freedom in its many forms, whether political, spiritual, or creative. “What was unique in making the album,” Evelyn tells Apple Music, “is that for the first time in forever, I didn’t have a flight booked, and all that space, time, and freedom really refreshed my connection with music. It felt like I was just making it for fun again.” He assembled this edition of Selects—a biweekly playlist in which DJs and producers showcase their favorite tracks of any given moment—based on music that influenced that record. Togolese singer Akofa Akoussah’s “I Tcho Tchass” is a recent discovery for Evelyn, “and I can’t stop playing it,” he says. “It has an eerie honesty to it.” He’s also included songs from jazz experimenter Theo Croker, broken-beat pioneer Mark de-Clive Lowe, and reggae/soul vocalist Liam Bailey, whose “Champion” Evelyn says “has all the essence of soundsystem culture, which is a big influence on me making music and becoming a DJ.” Hear all his Selects and add anything you like to your library.
