A frenetic rock ‘n' roll spirit charges through Sambomaster's uptempo, throaty music. Sudden turns from melodic pop to thrashing punk within the span of one song have become this trio's calling card since the early '00s. Lead singer Takashi Yamaguchi's voice matches the band's versatility: He easily swerves from softly sung words to a Jagger-esque howl. On driving cuts (“Rock ‘n' Roll Is Not Dead”) as well as more shambling moments (“I Love You”), Yamaguchi adds an extra layer of unpredictability to music already in constant motion.
