Sam Rivers: The Session Musicians

Sam Rivers: The Session Musicians

When not leading his own ensembles, Sam Rivers was an equally spirited sideman. He contributes frenetic tenor sax to a live version of “Walkin'” with Miles Davis' band, while going much smoother on Chaka Khan's jazz tribute “Coltrane Dreams.” Ever adaptable, Rivers lends flitting flute to Dave Holland Quartet's avian valentine “Conference of the Birds,” and his gleaming sax gymnastics dazzle against Don Pullen's jostling piano on “Joycie Girl.”
