Two years after the Rough Trade record shop opened in London's Ladbroke Grove in '76, owner Geoff Travis formed a label to capture the thrilling sounds emerging from punk's wake. Helping to define the age's DIY spirit, Rough Trade released everything from Stiff Little Fingers' buzzsaw punk to Young Marble Giants' abstract minimalism, before The Smiths' early singles took them into the pop charts.
