By drenching her dreamy pop melodies in the sonic palettes of mid-’90s alt-rock, Lauren Isenberg, a.k.a. renforshort, has created a sound that’s her very own: “bubblegum grunge”. The two elements might seem incongruent, but in the hands of renforshort, they meld like flannel and Chuck Taylors, and on songs like the moody and brash “idc”, from her 2020 debut, teenage angst EP, her breathy voice sits comfortably beside the roaring guitar. The brighter “f**k, i luv my friends” places a woozy, distorted riff against splashy, Oasis-influenced drums, while the delicate “afterthoughts” finds Isenberg sounding world-weary and awash in reverb.
