Remedios Amaya Essentials

Flamenco veteran Remedios Amaya shot to fame in 1978 with her self-titled debut album. In 1983, she represented Spain at the Eurovision Song Contest, where she gave a valiant performance of “Quien Maneja Mi Barca”, a disco-inflected, synth-driven interpretation of the traditional flamenco form. A string of releases in the flamenco-rock style followed over the years, peaking in 1997 with her biggest success, “Turu Turai (Tango)”, a keening, pleading track that, coming almost 20 years after her debut album, is testament to Amaya’s longevity and wide appeal. With hit records spanning several decades, Amaya is a force not just in flamenco but also in tango and Spanish rumba.
